Ooty: Western Ghats appears to be the home of the Kangaroo’s cousin, a species in the Marsupial family of the Kangaroos, if one goes by the claim made by Kerala based conservation biologist and researcher Dijo Thomas, as he intensified his studies on Raktha Athika, otherwise known as Vampire Kangaroo, which was spotted a couple of times in Tirusuur area in Kerala three years ago.
It is pertinent to note that Dijo Thomas hit the headlines recently for his discoveries regarding a species and sub-species relating to a dog hunter wild animal, that includes Neelagiri kaduva & Neelagiri cheruvan.
Stating that he submitted his findings with photographic evidence at the Indian science congress in 2017 itself, he said this Raktha Athika was wrongly interpreted as palm civet cat in the initial stages in Kerala. But, after studying its morphology and behavior, it was confirmed it was a new species which most probably is a distant cousin of Kangaroo family or family of marsupials.“But, what is very distinctive is that unlike the Kangaroo, which is herbivorous, this Raktha Athika, belong to a different species, is a blood sucker. Its morphological features show that it has webbed hand that proves it is a good swimmer also,” he said.
“Many wonder what is the connection between Kangaroo which is Australia based and this Raktha Athika which lives in India. But, one looks at the evolution angle one can draw conclusion that there is a possibility of a sub-species or an ancient species of Kangaroo family living in Western ghats. Since, this Raktha Athika is a rare and rarely spotted animal, it is obvious, the presence of this animal with marsupial traits has not come to the fore now,” he explained and added that more studies in western ghats in deep woods is needed to arrive a further inference on this species which must have ancient history like dinosaurs.

Continental drift may have taken main species to Australia: Dijo Thomas
Dijo Thomas
Ooty: Putting forth his arguments on how Kangaroo could have lived in Indian sub-continent, Mr Dijo Thomas, a Kerala biologist, explained that various evidences over the years on various species of animals across the globe showed that presence of similar and identical species on continents that are now immense distances away.
“The formation of continents showed that about 250 million years ago all five continents in world were almost a contiguous land mass to form the super continent which is otherwise called Pangea.
At that time, all the animal species in the world would have lived and moved around in the adjacent land masses. When the continents drifted away due to geological phenomenon millions of years ago, Australian continent moved to the far south eastern side and Indian sub-continent became housed in the middle of Asia, which made many animal species move to different continents. In case of Kangaroo, the main species stayed in Australia and ecologically adapted to Australian conditions.”
“However, some of the species in Kangaroo family, or a sub-species in it, with its gene poll intact could have stayed back in the Indian sub-continent. After millions of years this sub-species could be beginning to manifest again in western ghats.
Further detail research is necessary on Raktha Athika to know more about how this animal is existing in Western Ghats that stretches between Maharastra and Kerala including parts of Tamil Nadu” he explained.
Another factor to be added in this study is that a species of Kangaroo family ‘Chupacabra’ was found in Latin America. This shows the evolutionary significance, though there was controversy in the scientific world on the existence of ‘Chupacabra’. But, many people in Latin America strongly believed in its existence. In the recent past, I took efforts through F3B-NSPM method (facts, features, factors etc., based-new species scientifically proving method), to prove the existence of Raktha Athika and presented papers on it at the ‘Indian Science Congress in 2017’. I used the same method to prove the existence of ‘Chupacabra’ in Latain America, through the studies on Raktha Athika, Mr.Dijo Thomas added.
